The Illinois Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to assist eligible low income households pay for winter energy services. LIHEAP will provide a one-time benefit to eligible households to be used for energy bills. The amount of payment is determined by income, household size, fuel type, and geographic location.
Required Forms & Supporting Document Checklist
- Social Security Card(s)/SSN printout(s) or proof of Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for ALL household members
- Proof of Income
- Proof of gross income from the last 30 days for every household member 18+ (i.e. wages, SSA/Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for all ages, child support, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), AABD, detailed unemployment findings, cash wages, etc.)
- Income for children who receive child support or Social Security Benefits
- If no income was received, submit a letter explaining hoe financial obligations were met (ie. SNAP, housing assistance, received a load or cash gift, etc.)
- Current heat (gas, oil, propane) and/or electric utility bill(s)
Qualifying Household Incomes
In order to qualify, you must have an annual household income (before taxes) that is below the following amounts:

A person who participates or has family members who participate in certain other benefit programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or certain needs-tested Veterans benefits may be automatically eligible.
