About Leyden Township
The Town of Leyden (Leyden Township) was established on April 2, 1850.
Leyden Township’s geographical reach includes Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Melrose Park, Norridge, Northlake, Park Ridge, River Grove, Rosemont and Schiller Park. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, there were 93,096 people, 32,387 households, and 22,127 families residing in the township. The population density was 4,672.56 inhabitants per square mile (1,804.09/km2). There were 35,824 housing units at an average density of 1,798.03 per square mile (694.22/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 56.15% White, 2.52% African American, 1.54% Native American, 3.76% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 21.05% from other races, and 14.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 42.97% of the population.
Unincorporated Leyden Township is home to approximately 10,000 residents. Unincorporated Leyden utilizes the Melrose Park Postal Service and uses the Northlake zip code of 60164. The Leyden Fire Protection District and Cook County Sheriff's Police protect the unincorporated area. Our Highway Department maintains 24 miles of roadway including repair and drainage. The Highway Department also assists Leyden Fire Protect and Northlake Fire Protection during emergencies. Our Sewer and Water department maintain 35 miles of water piping that distribute water and sanitary sewer service to all unincorporated Leyden Township and parts of Northlake and Franklin Park.
In 2000, the Leyden Town Hall was relocated to 2501 N Mannheim Road in Franklin Park from it's original locations of 10200 W Grand Avenue in Franklin Park. Leyden Family Services currently houses that location.
